STAFF SERGEANT DYLAN E. AKPAN
Staff Sergeant Dylan E. Akpan is the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of Administration for AFROTC Detachment 280 at The University of Kansas. He mentors the 65+ member detachment of future U.S. Air Force and Space Force officers, comprised of college freshman through seniors. He assists in overseeing cadets at Leadership laboratories. Sergeant Akpan is the primary for Detachment 280’s administrative programs such as cadet pay, scholarship funding, IT, medical clearances, security clearances, travel arrangements, contracting, and commissioning.
Sergeant Akpan is a Human Resources & Administration Journeyman by trade and has completed administrative duties for over 120,000 military and civilian personnel. While working Customer Support at the Military Personnel Flight, he led 6 airman & 16 programs while filling a vacant Staff Sergeant position for 6 months & a Master Sergeant position for 3 weeks. He fixed 16 ID card system equipment assets in less than 20 hours, conducted function checks eliminating a potential 6-month work order, & saved 2.2K man-hours annually, earning recognition from the Wing Commander. Additionally, he was handpicked to fill a Commander Support Staff position as a Senior Airman, acting as the sole advisor to the unit’s command team. He was responsible for administrative and readiness actions for over 300 military, civilian, and contractor members. He directed 25 initiatives, overseeing 71 administrative actions & executed critical personnel system updates. He guided his unit through the myEval and myDecs migration, developing how-to-guide’s, mentored over 70 supervisors & processed evaluations and decorations throughout 7 flights. He identified 340 official leave discrepancies; teamed with Finance/Air Force Personnel Center and returned 1.7K days of use-or-lose leave, earning a quarterly award for his performance.
Sergeant Akpan created real-time tracking tools to accelerate personnel changes, authored over a dozen Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that increased efficiency at each assigned unit, and developed a scheduling platform for gate guard augmentees that saved hundreds of man-hours annually. He has earned multiple awards, including the unit's sole "Superior Performer" award during a Wing inspection, and has been coined for excellence by leadership at the Wing, United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), and Military Personnel Flight levels.
