FAQs

Q: How do I apply for AFROTC at KU?

A: As a freshman, you can join AFROTC by registering for Air 100 and Air 144 for the Fall semester. Please contact our recruitment officer Capt Gordon at peter.gordon@ku.edu for more information about recruiting.

Q: I never participated in a Junior ROTC program. Will that hinder me?

A: No. Most of our cadets did not participate in a form of JROTC program. There are some parallels between a JROTC and a college-level program (patriotism, discipline, rank structure), but history has proven that any cadet regardless of previous experiences in high school can compete highly in AFROTC.

Q: I didn't get an Air Force ROTC scholarship. Can I still join?

A: Absolutely! Even if you didn't get a scholarship right out of high school, you can still compete for an in-college scholarship once you join our program. Scholarships are not required to join, much less are they required to earn a commission.

Q: Do I have to wear a uniform every day?

A: No. You will wear your uniform on Wednesday for Leadership Laboratory (LLAB) as well as the time of your weekly ROTC class program.

Q: How does the AFROTC program fit into my college life?

A: A typical week for the first two years will consist of around 5 hours of AFROTC related training. This breaks down into 2 hours a week of physical training in the morning, 2 hours for LLAB on Wednesday afternoon, and 1 hour for your weekly Air Class. There are plenty of opportunities outside of this set schedule to become more involved and participate in our extracurriculars such as Honor Guard.

Q: Must I attend Kansas University to join AFROTC?

A: No. Detachment 280 also accepts students interested in the program from these local schools: Baker University, Benedictine College, Donnelly College, Haskell Indian Nations University, Johnson County Community College, Mid America Nazarene University, Ottawa University, Park University, University of Saint Mary and Washburn University.
